History of Bijagua

Bijagua has its name due to a beautiful flower that grows in its rain forests. Whose leaves were used by its first inhabitants of the area to wrap meats, make tamales and save their food, in order to preserve them for a longer time. The leaves of the bijagua flower were used as dishes. Their roads or "tracks" as they called it, were originally created by the Malekus indigenous people who traveled these mountains in search of food, and to shorten the way to the Guanacaste lowlands where they sold their products. Bijagua was initially populated with families from the Guanacaste lowlands, from cities such as reeds, moraine lands and Upala. This area, before being agricultural and ranching, was very mountainous and rainy, very rich in wild animals for hunting such as the zaino, tepezcuinte, wild pig whose name was ¨Cariblanco¨, wild goats, deer, etc. Nowadays all this hunting is prohibited, but at that time herds of 150 and 200 animals could be seen in these mountainous plains that served as food for its inhabitants at that time.
